These needlepoint designs are inspired by the rich knitting traditions of Shetland.
They make use of patterns found in traditional Fair Isle knitting, and are worked in the same Shetland wool too, all grown here on the islands.
These mini hoop designs feature the larger single motifs usually found on the tops of gloves, or in the yokes of jumpers, and come with a bamboo embroidery hoop that can be used as a frame, ready to hang.
This galley design honours the Fire Festival season, also known as Up Helly Aa. From January to mid-March, Shetlanders celebrate their viking heritage with torchlit processions and galley burnings. There are 12 festivals throughout the islands, each led by a Guizer Jarl and their squad in full viking regalia, including shields and axes held proudly aloft against the dark night sky. The outline of the galley against the kerosene-scented flames is hugely evocative for the Islands.
